Nighted Life Presents: Blood of the Young

BOTY is the hardest working group of folks in the zine game, straight up. Everything they do is sick as fuck, and if you aren’t already up on them, we feel sorry and hyped for you at the same time.

For those who don’t know, what is Blood of the Young?
Blood of the Young is… well, a lot of things, haha. I guess we make books and zines and prints and shirts and other wearables and make exhibitions happen and are based in Toronto, Canada. I guess we’re a tight-knit group of hardworking artists staying busy.

Where did the idea originally come from?
Reilly was living on the west coast, me on the east… we had known each other for years through music stuff (he was in a band, i was good at taking photos) and were essentially doing the same things- making a bunch of stuff and not being sure what to do with it. We kinda just accepted that it makes more sense to work together than as rivals, so we decided to… do something about it, haha.

Do you have individual roles within BOTY?
Nah, we don’t play that game- we all got ‘creative director’ on our cards, haha. We all do everything- no matter what. We’ve kinda sorted out our workflow after 100+ zines, haha.

How do you choose the photographs/ people to be featured?
It’s easy- it’s something good. That’s the only criteria, haha. I mean, obviously there’s some 'cultural’ lean towards graff and skateboarding or whatever, but that’s because it’s what we know. I’m sure if we were a bunch of university dorks or trust fund dslr busters our blog would be hella different, haha.

Can you describe what you look for in a “good” photo?
It belongs to someone, you know? It doesn’t look anonymous. It just slams you for some reason, ANY reason.

Do you guys work day jobs, too? How much of your time is spent on the BOTY hustle?
24/7 BOTY stressing, haha. I guess we moonlight at dayjobs, never really seriously… we’re in a lucky position, I suppose- we’re both busy with our 'art’ outside of BOTY, whether it’s freelance or whatever, so we kinda keep that money coming in. That being said, I am so broke right now I could cry. Our studio got fucked and I fucked a job so i’m $1k down this month… good luck paying my rent, I guess.
(Note from the Nighted editor: That’s a fucked up situation, please support the homies!! Go spend some $$ in the BOTY Shop!)

What else are you guys into? Where can we catch you in your spare time?
Writing on other people’s stuff or skateboarding- not much else 'cause there isn’t really any spare time. I mean, we have no choice but to stay busy- it’s all we know.

What’s next for BOTY??
God, you tell me! We’ve got a big sale this week for 'Grey Thursday’ in our shop… two new releases by the end of the year, and hopefully gold teeth by spring.

Shout-outs:
Blood of the Young: Joey Skilton, trh, Sonia, Dimitri.. Shout out to Josh Hicke and Jamie Allan Shaw, they’re in the gang too! Oh and Brendan Meganetty, he’s family.

Thanks again to the BOTY gang- go peep their blog and shop- and look out for some photos from them in Nighted Life 2 next month!

Nighted Life Presents: Marco Hernandez

Marco puts in work, and it shows. Here are his thoughts on theme music, hard work, and being the turnt the fuck up:

Break down your life story in one sentence.
Just out here trying to turn these dreams into a reality.

What do you look for when taking photos?
I look for things I find interesting and explain my life the way I want it to; everyone has their own story. Everything I come across on the daily, whether it be when I’m skating or just walking alone. I bring a camera with me everywhere I go, this way I don’t get bummed out on seeing something and not being able to take a photo of it.

How turnt up are you, on a scale from 1 to 10?
I’m fly as fuck- my turnt up rating is a 10, bruh.

Do you have a day job?
Yeah, I have had my share of shitty jobs here and there but I am just trying to hold on to whatever I have in order to get by. Life is expensive!

If you had to start your day listening to one song for the rest of ur life, what would it be?
I would have to go with ‘Lazuli’ by Beach House. I’d be happy and relaxed every morning if my entire life was a Beach House soundtrack. I bring my ipod with me every time I’m traveling, I hate the sound of people.

What does the Nighted motto “knowing better, doing worse” mean to you?
Just knowing all the things that you should be doing, but not doing them at all. YOLO.

Got any goals with your photography?
My main goal is to have as much fun as I can with it as possible. I just want to keep shooting photos of everything, whether it be an idea I had in mind or something that I come across.

What’s next for you?
Just keep taking photos and working hard every damn day. I’m always blowing my money on buying film, developing film, repeat. Hard work is about giving everything you’ve got into anything that you are doing, I don’t think money has anything to do with hard work- the payment is your result.

Shout-outs?
Shout out to Nighted for the opportunity to work on some shit together. Blood of The Young zine, much respect, those dudes are the shit and I’m down with everything they’re doing. The people of Williamsburg, Brooklyn that lurk my Tumblr photo posts. SUNDAYS, NYskateboarding.com. All of my friends for letting me take photos of them constantly even though I know it can be annoying having a camera pointing at you every moment. Trap-A-Holics mixtapes for giving my life meaning. If I missed anyone, I’m sorry, you can fuck me up later.

Check out his blog for more photos, and keep watch for some zines and other projects from Marco and Nighted!

Nighted Life Presents: Shawn Whisenant

Dude is everywhere- act like you know.

It seems like your life is a whirlwind of creative side-hustles (art, photography, shows, zines, sign painting…). That’s fucking awesome.

How do you keep yourself on schedule?

Yeah, it makes it super hard when people ask me what I do for a living. I guess I work in the creative world. Everyday is different. This year I’ve been really focusing on my sign painting business and getting that up and running. One day I’ll be sign painting up on a ladder or at the bottom of a staircase, shooting skate photos, meeting with clients, or at home, sewing zines and making art. Just about everyday consists of a little of all that stuff. It all works out. There is no schedule, you just get things done when they need to be done. My life is filled with deadlines. It’s a non-stop grind. Always working. A whirlwind to say the least, but I love every minute of doing what I do.

Is there a standard daily routine you stick to? If so, what’s that like?

Depends on what deadlines I have, or signs in the works. I always wake up at 7am, and by 8 or 9 I’m out getting coffee. I always go shoot photos around the city in the morning, I love the chilly SF mornings. Then by 11, it’s home to emails and whatever the day brings! Today, I’m painting a sign for a camera store here in SF, editing photos, have to go meet with a gallery at 1, hardware store, post office, walk the dog, etc. Then my day usually ends between about 11pm and 2am, depending on how I feel.

Let’s do some call and response: I’m going to throw out some phrases- let us know what they mean to you.

E-40- Everyone who really knows me knows I’m a huge longtime fan of Uncle Earl!

San Francisco- Home and history.

Blood of the Young- My boys up in Canada, and longtime supporters of my work! They make the super sick zines. I have a new publication with them coming out soon! BOTY!

35mm- Always in my pocket. Today it’s some Kodak Tmax B&W 400.

Needles and Pens- Best zine store on the planet! If you visit SF, stop by and buy one of my zines! Andrew, the owner, is a fellow sign painter and all around good guy! needles-pens.com

Bombing- Damm, need to get out and do some. Street cred don’t pay the bills, and I’m older now, so I’m not done painting outside but things have changed on the streets and in my life these days. Always got a pen and pocket full of stickers, but it’s not bombing, it’s just maintaining the name. Hard to call what I do bombing anymore, but you’ll for sure see me up in any train yard or major city!

48 Blocks- My folks and fam! It’s an SF based skateboard site I do a lot of journalism stuff for. I have done a lot of cool interviews with pro skaters for their site. Check them out at 48blocks.com

Shawn has an awesome blog, flickr, and he’s featured in our Nighted Life Zine!!
