NIGHTED Life Introduces: Joseph Rayo
Who are you?
I’m Joseph Rayo. I was born and raised in San Francisco, and I’ve been making photos for about 7 years now. I got my first camera on my 15th birthday it was a Canon Eos Rebel; I’ve been hooked ever since. Shouts out to the doldrums of Pacifica.
What do you look for, if anything, when taking photos?
Things that come to mind are emotion, movement, shadows, natural and staged aesthetics, and humor. For the most part I take advantage of what that moment in time offers me.
When was the last time you witnessed something unexplainable?
The other night I had just gotten home from work, and I was walking into the kitchen when I saw something move quickly in my peripheral vision. Then a second later this pair of scissors fell off a table; yeah it was some shit. From what I heard someone committed suicide in this house; so it goes.
Where is your favorite place to be?
I don’t have a favorite place because there is so much I have yet to see… I do enjoy being the in the mountains with nature, and away from the city and cars. The mountains up in Arcata are very nice.
Why do you live the way you do?
I get great feels whenever I put my eye to a viewfinder, and this helps me see the world with more clarity and approach life in an abstract manner. There’s something 2pac said once- “keep your head up, and stick your chest out.” This resonates with me as a way to handle the realities of life, for life is as simple as that.
